SuVi is a California-based Singer-Songwriter / Artist of Indian origin, who gained recognition after having sung on several projects, including tracks on movies such as Highway, Blue (film), Ghajini and Raavan for Grammy & Oscar winning composer, A. R. Rahman (Slumdog Millionaire, 127 Hours, Million Dollar Arm) . SuVi entered the Indian music industry as a teenager, through the first South Indian Pop Band, to be signed with Sony BMG called S5. S5 also gave rise to several other talented Indian artists such as Bhargavi Pillai, Anaitha Nair, Benny Dayal and Arjun Sasi. SuVi then became known as a Playback Singer for having lent her voice to several top Indian film actresses. She has sung in several Indian regional languages including Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, Kanada, Bengali, Oriya and Hindi. She has also worked with famous Indian Music Directors like Pravin Mani, Ouseppachan, Ilayaraja, Harris Jayaraj, Deepak Dev, and Yuvan Shankar Raja. Kodaana Kodi from the movie Saroja and Aska Laska from the move Nanban are some of her massive hits.
As a child, SuVi was more into dancing and sports. She won several accolades for the same at Inter school and district levels. She was also a District Level Badminton player. Music became a part of her life when she first watched Michael Jackson on MTV in 1992, after her family installed Cable TV at her home in Chennai. Her first vocal lessons began from her school’s music teacher, Mrs. Meenakshi Mani, who thought SuVi had a unique, powerful voice for an eleven-year-old child and selected her to sing the morning prayers at the school assembly. She was also into public speaking, poetry writing and other Literary activities. Suvi now recollects that as a child writing poems would transport her to a land of fantasy, richness and everything a child could ask for. She entered limelight once she was selected to be part of the Band S5 in 2004. In the music industry, she wanted to be known by the name everyone called her,- Swe but on the credits of the movie Kuruvi directed by Dharani her name was printed as SuVi. Although initially very demoralized about it, she later decided to stick with her new name as she found out that SuVi meant Summer in several European languages and it helped in maintaining her nationality, a mystery!. After having sung in more than a 100 films as a playback singer, she realized that her true passion lies in songwriting. So in 2012, she decided to leave behind her career in India and move to Los Angeles to get acquainted with the international stage as a Singer/ Songwriter. Her urge to leave the country and the Fullride Scholarship to go to the prestigious contemporary music school in Hollywood, Musicians Institute happened at the same time. She won the scholarship after submitting her song Mind Games which she had written together with her then band SoulSonic, for consideration to the Musicians Institute jury. SoulSonic now plays live for India’s Famous Singer, Benny Dayal as Funktuation. SuVi also mentions that she still gets to work with Mr.[A. R. Rahman] at his Los Angeles Studio on and off. Her songwriting skills helped her gain attention from several Music Producers such as Devin Parker, Eric Jackson ( Lady Gaga, Michael Jackson, Seal, Baby Face), Toni Braxton, Storm ( Robin thicke, Mary.J.Blidge), Swagga Bob, Drop On Top and Karan Parikh. SuVi is known for her dynamic stage performances. She believes that nothing feels more at home than being able to perform on stage to a crowd that wants to listen to you. She has performed at world-renowned venues such as the Wembley Stadium in U.K, The Dubai Sport Centre, Music Academy and Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in India, The Nokia Plaza, Viper Room, The Federal and House Of Blues in Los Angeles, before packed audiences of 100 to even 20,000 people. She is also a proficient Hip-Hop dancer. She is currently working on her album Delirium, which has been getting a lot of attention even with just an unofficial release Soundcloud. Through her journey, SuVi hopes to inspire many more South Asian Artists to write and perform mainstream English music while still sticking to their cultural roots like similar other Indian Artists such as Hard Kaur, Monica Dogra and Jay Sean.
